Homecoming Saturday saw an exciting but disappointing
outcome as the Lumberjack football team fell to Minnesota State CTC – Fergus
Falls 38-35 at Les Christian Field. Fergus Falls scored first, but 2
quick DCB scores put the Lumberjacks up 13-7. Fergus Falls scored in the
second quarter to take the lead 14-13. The Lumberjacks had two more great
opportunities to score later in the first half, but a wide open touchdown pass
was dropped and then with 40 seconds left in the half, the Lumberjacks were at
the 1 yard line at 4th and goal. They decided to go for the
touchdown, but were denied and went in at half trailing by 1.
The third quarter has not been kind to DCB this fall and
Saturday was no exception. Fergus Falls scored two long touchdowns on a
quarterback scramble and a long pass and added a field goal off a bad punt snap
to take the lead to 31-13 before the Lumberjacks responded. 2 quick
touchdowns and 2 two point conversions brought the score to 31-29. Fergus
Falls scored to up the lead to 9, but the Lumberjacks responded to cut the lead
to 38-35 with about 6 minutes left. The Spartans of FF went on a long
drive, were finally denied inside the 10 with about 3 minutes to go. DCB
had two great opportunities to get a drive going, but went 3 and out and the
game was over.
With the loss, DCB is now 1-3 at the regular season midpoint
and has some work to do if they expect to make the MCAC playoffs for a third
straight year. The Lumberjacks host Minnesota West CTC this upcoming
Saturday, September 24th with a noon kickoff, the second of a 3 game
homestand.
