For the second straight season, DCB football opened the 2016
season against a seasoned, experienced, and well-prepared opponent, the Raiders
of Central Lakes College. The young Lumberjacks made too many mistakes
early and fell to CLC 51-26 on Saturday.
Central Lakes jumped on the Lumberjacks early and often,
taking a 21-0 lead after one quarter and 28-0 by the middle of the second
stanza. The game was played fairly even after that with the Jacks actually
outscoring Central Lakes 26-23 the rest of way, but too many early mistakes and
blown assignments and opportunities doomed DCB. The score was what one
might expect when a young and inexperienced team is playing on the road against
a top 20 experienced opponent, but it was still a frustrating afternoon all
around.
For the Lumberjacks, Jacob Clair had 4 catches for 162 yards
and a touchdown and DeRante Sanders ran a kickoff back 84 yards for another
score. Trent Postma had 9 tackles on defense and Nathaniel Smith recorded
7 tackles and an interception on the afternoon. The Lumberjacks did not
escape the game without injuries however, including a most likely season ending
injury to starting quarterback Ja’Vonte Johnson.
DCB, now 0-1 on the season, will have their home opener on
Saturday, September 3rd when they take on the 0-1 Vermilion
Community College Ironmen at Les Christian Field in Bottineau. Game time
will be 1:30.
